Building Community, Providing Support and Fostering Friendship

About

Prideaux House has been running as an independent local charity for over 30 years. The great majority of the running costs are provided by our Charity Shop situated at the top of the Narrow Way (207 Mare Street), Hackney Central which has become well known and  much loved by thousands of customers.

Prideaux House has always sought to meet the needs of local residents in whatever way possible. Our hall and kitchen are regularly used by our Friday Lunch Club, two AA groups, a Men’s Mental Health Support Group, the Friends of Well Street Common and a local Tenants’ Association. It can be booked both by local community groups, at our community rate, and by private individuals for small social events. The capacity of the hall is 50. In addition, we have two meeting rooms on our first floor, accessible either by stairs or a lift.

During Covid our hall was used by local charity ChildrenwithVoices as a Food Hub and during the cold weather in winter 2023/24 it served as a Night Shelter, run by charity Hackney Doorways. We have hosted art exhibitions, craft fairs and Greenery Days – selling plants – and our hall has also been used for balance and fitness classes.

Prideaux House’s Lunch Club runs on Fridays 12 – 3pm and is open to local people over 55, looking for a friendly place to meet others and share a two course hot meal. The meals are cooked by a varied team of local volunteers and we enjoy a range of cuisine! The cost of a meal is currently £5.
